Learning systems adapted to each student

In Viladecans we are part of a pioneering transnational initiative, the European project IMAILE. This project aims to improve the educational success by the personalization of the learning process in the classrooms thanks to the technology.

IMAILE is supported by 10 partners from 7 countries and funded by the European Commission under the 7th Framework Program of the European Union. This is the first pre-commercial public procurement process in the field of education in the European Union.

The project aims to develop Personal Learning Environments (PLE) of new generation for primary and secondary levels in the field of STEM subjects (Biology, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry). The development of these PLEs will allow a learning process that will be adapted to the individual needs of each student and will make possible a detailed follow-up by parents and teachers, taking advantage of the use of new Information and Communication Technologies.

10 partners from 7 countries are taking part in IMAILE project:

Procurers:

● City of Halmstad (Sweden) - project coordinator and contracting entity

● City of Konnevesi (Finland)

● Sachen-Anhalt Region (Germany)

● City of Viladecans (Spain)

Countries providing external support:

● The Development and Innovation Regional Agency of the region of Észak-Alföld (Hungary)

● The universities of Otto-Von-Guericke, Magdeburg (Germany), and Jyvaskyla (Finland)

● The consultancy INNOVA + (Portugal)

● ENTER - European Network for the Transfer and Exploitation of EU Project Results (Austria)

● City of Varberg (Sweden)

Encourage the development of technological applications to create Personal Learning Environments in the subjects of Biology, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry.

Europe is facing major challenges in the field of education. The school should not be left behind and must follow the fast pace marked by the current society. In this context, IMAILE aims to tackle these challenges and prepare the classroom for the educational needs of 2030.

These prototypes, mainly technology based, should:

1. Facilitate teachers’ work with the preparation of their classes using the most varied and motivating digital resources;

2. Enable the student learning process to be more successful by adapting it to its own individual rhythm.

The prototypes can be used from any device and allow teachers and students to work on the core subjects (in this case Biology, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry) adapting to new and future educational needs.

The PCP enables a dialogue between the demand and the supply sector; In this case, a dialogue between the educational community and the procurers, on the one hand, and the development companies during the process of prototype design and testing, on the other. This interaction allows the process of research, development and innovation to take into account the needs of the end users (educational centres, teachers and students). In other words, it stimulates innovation taking into account the needs of the users to whom it is oriented.

The main expected results of the project are:

1. The development of two innovative and customized PLE prototypes that respond to the needs defined by the end users and that are ready to be commercialized in the market once the project is finished;

2. The evaluation and compilation of recommendations and lessons acquired during the joint PCP process between entities from 4 countries in order to transfer it to other entities in similar situations.

The project also aims to:

• Contribute to EU standards in relation to PLE for primary and secondary levels

• Promote the PCP process as a method of improving public services

• Promote PLE as a tool for educational innovation in Europe

PHASES OF THE PROJECT: Analysis of needs

Analysis of market needs and preparation of the Pre-commercial Public Procurement process. Through surveys and workshops, we try to identify needs and assess whether there are existing solutions in the market or not. The analysis carried out confirmed that there was no existing solution in the market that responded to the identified needs and challenges. The existence of an innovation gap was confirmed.

A three-phase process

- Phase I: The participating companies propose a solution design. Of the 12 proposals that were submitted, one was rejected for not meeting the administrative requirements and only 7 had all the required technical requirements. More information

- Phase II: The participating companies develop the prototypes. Out of the 7 proposals, four of them passed into the second phase. The selected proposals were led by Finpeda OY, Almerin KY, IMC Information Multimedia Communication AG and Editions Don Bosco Salesianos, from Barcelona. More information

- Phase III: Two of the participating companies produce a limited number of prototypes and test them with a sample of end users. More information

Current state

At present we are in the last phase (3rd phase) of the pre-commercial public procurement process. The 2 selected proposals (AMIGO & Almerin) will create prototypes of their PLE on a small scale, so that teachers and students of the 4 cities and regions of the procurer group (Halmstad, Konnevesi, Sachsen-Anhalt and Viladecans) will be able to test them in classrooms.

The objective is to allow end users, teachers and students test them in real situations so that they can send their comments to providers. This ensures that final solutions are tailored to their needs.
