Viladecans celebrates Europe Day 2024 with the involvement of young people

High school students from Viladecans from the Miramar, the Sant Gabriel and Teide schools celebrated Europe Day yesterday at the Can Xic Youth Resource Centre, in an event dedicated especially to local youth. The event had a hybrid format – in person and online –, between 12 and 1:30 p.m., and included the intervention of the head of the Barcelona Provincial Council Office in Brussels, Blanca Soler.

The activity, which was welcomed by the Deputy Mayor and Councillor for Education Gisela Navarro (also member of the BELC network), began with an introduction to the European Union, explaining what this organization is and what impact it has regarding rights and laws. Afterwards there was a connection with the head of the Barcelona Provincial Council Office in Brussels, Blanca Soler, who explained the functioning of the institutions, political priorities and other issues related to the EU.

The young participants participated in a question-and-answer session with Blanca Soler, showing their interest in the origins of the Union, the possible incorporation of new countries or how it is possible that there are countries within the EU that do not have the euro as their currency. They have also shown interest in knowing "what you have to study to be able to be in the European Parliament" and the importance of the participation of municipalities in European projects.

At the end of the connection, municipal technicians presented a practical case on the impact of the EU to publicize what Viladecans does at the European level. Thus, they have explained their participation in European projects that provide the city with resources, knowledge, projection and innovation, among others, highlighting the NextGen YouthWork and the Green Leaf. They have also highlighted the active role of Viladecans in the European Union and shown some examples of the events in which the municipality has participated. The event ended with the presentation of EU opportunities for youth, such as the Erasmus+, European Solidarity Corps, Dircover EU, EU Youth Dialogue and EUREs projects.
