“A two-day European conference inspires on citizen empowerment in the energy transition”

Viladecans is full of energy. Just a week after the city hosted the 17th Set Plan Conference, on the 23rd and 24th November the city hosted the EU City Lab on Energy Transition organized by URBACT and the European Urban Initiative. The conference, held at Can Xic and attended by people from all over Europe, addressed, among other issues, the challenges of establishing energy communities and how a multilevel governance approach can help shape better cities.

The session of Thursday 23 November was introduced and presented by the Deputy Mayor for Ecological Transition, Jordi Mazón, who stressed "Viladecans' strong commitment to ecological transition and the importance that the Vilawatt project has had for citizens". On the other hand, the head of the Knowledge and Communication Unit of URBACT, Jenny Koutsomarkou, explained how the cities that come together in this event can improve the ecological transition at the local level.

After various presentations on energy issues and ecological transition, in the afternoon the speakers visited the Vilawatt office, the Enxaneta school, the market of Plaza Europa and the Library of Viladecans, four buildings that illustrate firsthand the energy projects the city is working on. The panels on Friday 24th consisted in working groups on how to face citizen challenges, about energy communities, just transition and financing opportunities to face the energy transition.
