THE IMPORTANCE OF GREEN SPACES

What comes to mind when you hear the words ‘urban biodiversity’? Right, even we’re not sure exactly what it means. But what if instead we told you we’re talking about quality of life?

As defined by biologist Jaume Terrades, the preservation and promotion of green spaces within the city are closely related to a better perception of public health. That is to say, more green, less stress!

In Viladecans we take this very seriously. That’s why we are part of the Local Government + Biodiversity Network 2010 coordinated by the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces and Fundación Biodiversidad.

Natural spaces and forest areas accounts for some 28% of our district.

Viladecans has over 500 hectares of natural spaces and forest areas.

Mas Ratés Forest Park

Did you know it was the residents of Viladecans who pushed for the development of Mas Ratés Forest Park? The city’s iconic green lung traces its origins to the beginning of the ‘90s when the most degraded parts of the flanks of the Sierra de Miramar began to be replanted. Today, occupying a total of almost 14 hectares, with groves of white pine, stone pine and holm oak, it is one of our most important urban facilities.

You may also be surprised to learn that it’s a great place for watching wildlife. You can see birds like the golden oriole and the tit, as well as butterflies. Thirty-eight different diurnal species have been counted in one special meadow alone!

Can Trius Forest Park

Smaller than Mas Ratés, Can Trius park covers three hectares of woodland and lies along the stream of the same name, between the neighbourhoods of Alba-Rosa and Mas Ratés. The park is known for its beautiful forest of white pine, holm and other types of oak, as well as different species native to the Mediterranean underbrush.

There are a number of itineraries so you can walk, relax in nature, enjoy outdoor activities and really get to know the area. One of the trails links up with Mas Ratés forest park so there’s an option to extend the walk.
