La Murtra lake

This is the La Murtra pond

La Murtra is one of the oldest wetlands in the Llobregat Delta. It’s also the smallest, but one of the ones we’re most proud to have on our doorstep and be able to share with you.

Here’s why: in the 20th century the lake became very polluted. It was a different time and environmental awareness wasn’t what it is these days. Fortunately, the towns of Viladecans and Gavà have been working hard to restore it. Garbage has been removed and a number of invasive species eliminated and little by little the area has recovered indigenous plants like cane, yellow iris or reeds. All these actions – aimed at promoting biodiversity and increasing the area’s ecological value – resulted in La Murtra lake being declared a Special Protection Area for Birds (SPA) as part of the Natura 2000 Network in 2006.

Today, the lake is a habitat for bird species such as the little bittern or kingfisher. If you like watching water birds, you’ll love this place!
